Root canals are required when the decay in a tooth becomes too deep and causes the tooth to become inflamed or infected, and eventually dies. A tooth can also require a root canal if it breaks into the area of the tooth that holds the nerve of the tooth. Root canal treatment involves removing the infected or inflamed nerve tissue, disinfecting the tooth, and then filling the space with a dental material.
